What is disinfection?

Disinfection is an operation that eliminates or kills micro-organisms and/or inactivates undesirable viruses carried by contaminated inert media depending on the objectives set (AFNOR NF T 72-101 standard). It is essential in air-conditioning equipment.

What does the term disinfection include?

5 different activities are grouped under the term disinfection:

  • Bactericide: Product that kills bacteria
  • Yeast Killer: A product that kills yeast.
  • Fungicide: Product that kills fungi (yeasts and moulds).
  • Sporicide: Product that kills bacterial spores.
  • Virucide: A product that kills viruses.

Thus one disinfectant may be only bactericidal, while another may be bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal.

  • Microorganisms are omnipresent in the environment: water, soil, humans and animals, food...
  • Bacteria colonize water-rich environments.
  • Fungi preferentially colonize wetlands.

HYGIENE IS ESSENTIAL FOR MANKIND TO PROTECT HIS HEALTH, WATER, FOOD AND ECOSYSTEM.

Why is it necessary to disinfect regularly?

The result of the disinfection operation is limited to the micro-organisms present at the time of the operation; disinfection does not prevent subsequent re-contamination and must therefore be repeated regularly.

Disinfection is an operation with a momentary result, making it possible to eliminate or kill micro-organisms and/or inactivate viruses carried on contaminated inert media according to the objectives set. The result of this operation is limited to the organisms present at the time of the operation.

Disinfect only what is clean.
Regular disinfection lowers the microbial density below a risk threshold.

What is the difference between disinfection, decontamination and sterilization?

table of understanding of the disinfection cycle

Decontamination

An operation designed to eliminate or reduce the number of microbes on living tissue and inert objects to levels considered safe, so as to meet hygiene and public health standards.

Disinfection

Operation with a momentary result making it possible to eliminate or kill micro-organisms and/or inactivate undesirable viruses carried by contaminated inert media according to the objectives set.

Sterilization

Sterilization is an operation to eliminate or kill micro-organisms carried by contaminated inert media, the result of this operation, not limited to the duration of application, being the state of sterility.
