• Legionnaire's disease: proliferates in poorly maintained ducts. It causes serious respiratory infections.

• Summary of this Standard :
• This European Standard applies to both new and old ventilation and air-conditioning systems and specifies the criteria for assessing cleanliness. The procedures for cleaning these systems, and the validation of the cleaning efficiency also applies to products conforming to EN 1505, EN 1506, EN 13053, EN 13180 and EN 13403, used in air-conditioning and ventilation systems for human occupation, defined in the scope of CEN/TC 156. This European Standard does not apply to industrial process installations. The cleanliness of ventilation systems is considered important for human comfort and health, energy consumption, the life of the system and for the cleanliness of the activities or processes carried out in the ventilation zone. Considerations for changing components as an alternative to cleaning (e.g. in the case of flexible ducts and air filters) are also included. This European Standard specifies the general requirements and procedures necessary to assess and maintain the cleanliness of ductwork ventilation, including: classification of the quality of cleanliness; how to assess the need for cleaning (visual inspection, measurements); frequency of assessments (general guidance); guidance for system inspections in accordance with EN 15239, and EN 15240 where relevant; selection of the cleaning method - as part of the documentation for type approval in accordance with EN 12599; how to assess the cleaning result. This European Standard is a parallel standard to EN 12097, which specifies the requirements for size, shape and location of access panels for cleaning and technical interventions in duct systems.
